Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!
There are only two short weeks until the Big 12 tournament tips off and everything starts to really count. Two short weeks to get everyone on the same page (I'm looking at you Jameel "Showtime" McKay) and lay waste to the Big 12 wannabes. This team reminds me so much of last year's team and has a very similar record at this point in the schedule. That team went on a magnificent run to end the season and eventually cut down the nets in Kansas City. That team also had it's distractions and issues throughout the season (I'm looking at you Bryce Dejean Jones) and lost focus in the first round of the tournament (I'm looking at you UAB). We can talk until we are blue in the face about missed opportunities (Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor x2, West Virginia, Texas A&M, Texas Tech) or that 7 of our 8 losses were to teams currently ranked in the Top 30 and our six conference losses were by a total of 29 points and 3 of those were in OT on the road. None of that matters come March. The Madness doesn't care what you did on January 2nd or Feb 16th. It's all about the here and now. This team has the makeup to beat any team in the country. They are truly that good... when they are focused. We need everyone to show up, EVERYONE, if we are going to make that happen. It's within their grasp and it all sits on the shoulders of a dozen 18-22 year old kids. That's a lot to ask of anyone, let's hope they respond. If they do, the fanbase will lose their collective minds and Showtime will take on a whole new meaning.
I had some extra time last week and decided to check out Winner's BBQ in Plano. Winners was opened last June by former Cyclone defensive back De'Andre Jackson ('08) and his wife Meagan. If you like good smoke and a nice rub you should definitely check it out. The restaurant is a work in progress as they are focusing on the food more than the decor but the Q was top notch and I enjoyed talking to De'Andre for about 30 minutes. He loves talking Iowa State sports and I'm hoping we can get him into the fold with the club. Keep it Cyclone!
