It's that time of year again when Iowa State fans from all over the Midwest converge on Kansas City to revel in the annual orgy of Cardinal and Gold. If you have not yet attended the Big 12 tournament, I highly recommend that you do so one day, it truly defies description. The last two tournaments ended with Fred Hoiberg and his squad cutting down the nets and hoisting the Big 12 Trophy on the midcourt stage. Neither of those teams was considered a favorite to win it all. As a matter of fact, it took comebacks of epic proportions to win several of those games. The Cardiac Clones have kept us entertained and thrilled us over these past two or three years. Eventually they will run out of luck and go home without the hardware. Could this be the year? Perhaps so. Perhaps not. Only time will tell if they can win three in a row in Coach Prohm's KC debut. Regardless of how the team does in KC this year, they are most likely going to settle into a four seed in the NCAA tournament next week. There are a lot of possible scenarios for where we will play, far too many to discuss in this forum. Rest assured that we will keep you abreast of our plans whether they be gamewatches or live game events in Oklahoma City or elsewhere. Enjoy the ride, March Madness is underway and you have a ticket.
Cys Day of Service Celebrate Iowa State by Serving your Community Cy's Days of Service is designed to unite alumni worldwide in community service during the month of April. This month of service is a great opportunity to help spread the pride alumni have in ISU, recognize the combined efforts of all alumni that have had a tremendous impact on local communities and show how ISU alumni change the world. In 2015, 459 alumni gave 3878 hours to their communities representing 28 states. This year DFW Cyclones are getting back in on the action! Have you ever wished that you could somehow give back to those policemen, firemen, EMTs and others that give of themselves every day? Here is your chance to do just that while representing Iowa State. Volunteer Now of Dallas can use our help at their Discount Depot! This event is open to all ISU Alumni and Friends. Please wear an ISU shirt if possible and join us. We will be sorting merchandise and helping in the store at VolunteerNow’s Dallas location of Donated Goods Discount Depot (2800 Live Oak Street, Dallas 75204). This retail store provides nonprofits access to items donated by area retailers for sale at a fraction of retail cost. Donors of new, surplus, and gently used items include generous corporate supporters such as JCPenney, Sam’s Club, Target, and many more. Shopping at Donated Goods is open to VolunteerNow’s member nonprofits, as well as local school district employees, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, military personnel, and veterans. After the event we will host a party/cook out with food and drinks provided by the club and the host family. Details of the party will be made available to all who attend the volunteer opportunity in the morning. The party will start as soon as we leave Volunteer Now. Saturday April 16th 8:30 to 12:30PM Party to follow Please sign up by sending an email to DFWCyclones@gmail.com with the names of the volunteers who plan to attend. Please let us know by April 12th at the very latest. It's Showtime Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! There are only two short weeks until the Big 12 tournament tips off and everything starts to really count. Two short weeks to get everyone on the same page (I'm looking at you Jameel "Showtime" McKay) and lay waste to the Big 12 wannabes. This team reminds me so much of last year's team and has a very similar record at this point in the schedule. That team went on a magnificent run to end the season and eventually cut down the nets in Kansas City. That team also had it's distractions and issues throughout the season (I'm looking at you Bryce Dejean Jones) and lost focus in the first round of the tournament (I'm looking at you UAB). We can talk until we are blue in the face about missed opportunities (Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor x2, West Virginia, Texas A&M, Texas Tech) or that 7 of our 8 losses were to teams currently ranked in the Top 30 and our six conference losses were by a total of 29 points and 3 of those were in OT on the road. None of that matters come March. The Madness doesn't care what you did on January 2nd or Feb 16th. It's all about the here and now. This team has the makeup to beat any team in the country. They are truly that good... when they are focused. We need everyone to show up, EVERYONE, if we are going to make that happen. It's within their grasp and it all sits on the shoulders of a dozen 18-22 year old kids. That's a lot to ask of anyone, let's hope they respond. If they do, the fanbase will lose their collective minds and Showtime will take on a whole new meaning. Metroplex Cytings I had some extra time last week and decided to check out Winner's BBQ in Plano. Winners was opened last June by former Cyclone defensive back De'Andre Jackson ('08) and his wife Meagan. If you like good smoke and a nice rub you should definitely check it out. The restaurant is a work in progress as they are focusing on the food more than the decor but the Q was top notch and I enjoyed talking to De'Andre for about 30 minutes. He loves talking Iowa State sports and I'm hoping we can get him into the fold with the club. Keep it Cyclone!
